Brocken Spectre at Mount Kinabalu

This angel-over-me rainbow is actually called a Brocken Spectre. Also known as Brocken bow, mountain spectre or glockenspectre . Lucky shot ... right place, right moment hehe awesome!

From Sabah

snippet:
To see a Brocken Spectre, specific weather conditions need to be met: the observer must be with his or her back toward the sun, for example in high-mountain areas where the sun is low. Many water droplets must be suspended in the air where the Spectre's glory appears
From Sabah

... it is advised to climbers to start climbing down to Laban Rata at ~8AM as the mist usually starts to thicken at that time, but I stayed until 9.30AM. This was taken at Low's peak and really glad that i stayed longer. The sun was behind my back and the mist in front helped create this wonderful phenomenon. Once in a lifetime experience :)

Btw, i cried at the top ... not once, but twice hahahaha

My climb up Mount Kinabalu part 1

- Went up Mount Kinabalu on 21st September in a total of 24 hours hahahaha. 15 hours up, 9 hours down. I cried twice hahahahaha :)

Notes:
- only had abt a month to train after the fasting month. Went up Bukit Tabur every weekend and the gym 3 times a week. As I found out, the trees and terrain at Bukit Tabur are very much alike.
Gym training regime:
- 3 sets of the following with no rest in between: bench-press/chest, biceps, triceps, shoulders, 100 sit-up, 8km stair master at hardest setting. My strategy was to push the anaerobic threshold, VO2 max and prepare the body for high altitudes

Some pics taken while training for the 'zombie-apocalypse' at Bukit Tabur. Used the opportunity to test the new Samyang 14mm f2.8 prime lens .... amazing value with 'L' performance. I'd totally recommend to anyone looking for a UWA.

this is how the samyang handled direct sunlight at f22 ... very well-mannered. Used to get a lot of crazy wild flares/spots with the 18-55.

Story:
- arrived early at the 'Kepala Budak' checkpoint ... decided to cut off a few branches and cleared a small rock to perch upon. A new and better angle to shoot the sunrise ...
-  sensed something was not happy and I didn't shoot much... do u see something freaky in the photo? This was the clearest image i got. Not processed HDR-ly
- had no problems climbing down the rocks but blardihell, a few dogs were waiting for me halfway at the bottom. I did what anyone would do in the same situation, RUN!

haha the fear of my ass getting chewed by dogs made me run like the wind. 100m zig zagging and screaming downhill and they finally gave up  ... I learnt my lesson. Don't fakk around with the Betty.

Vacationing at Pulau Perhentian

Was at Perhentian Island Resort for a few days ... amazing place to wind down and enjoy your holidays. Scroll down for pictures :)

map:

Notes:
- 8 hrs drive from Kuala Lumpur ... started my journey from Kuala Lumpur around midnight. Only 1 pitstop
- didn't notice any private/dedicated car parks at the Kuala Besut jetty, so i parked the car besides someone's house. huhu
- the 45m boat ride can a bit rough. The water taxis just love to race among themselves ... be prepared for a sore butt

- don't go during school holidays or on Sundays. I was only able to check in at 4pm as the room was not ready. They were severely understaffed. Family just went the beach and swam
- The resort has its own private beach, the nicest in my opinion, but there's no stopping tourists/non-guests from other parts of the island to go there. Haha felt like i was in a different country ... could swear that 80% were Europeans.

- The boats were fully booked for snorkeling/diving trips and the resort gave priority to those who payed earlier; ie booked the resort rooms together with the snorkelling/diving packages. Had to charter an entire boat that came all the way from K. Besut for the afternoon ... hehe managed to convince a korean family into sharing the cost with me. We went to Teluk Kekek, Shark point, Turtle watching at Tuna Bay and Long beach

- There's more variety of food at the south side of the island (Telaga Batu) ... bring a torch light as the jungle trail/stairways are not properly lit. I'd recommend Mama's Chalet and Watercolor.

- The night life is virtually non-existant, very quiet and the restaurants/cafes usually close and take the last order at 9.30pm. To make things more interesting, there's also no TV in the rooms. However, 3G coverage was good and surfing the internet was uncannily fast

- Being situated in the middle of the two islands (Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil), there's no easy way to watch the sunrise and sunset. *ouch* ... and during my stay, the nights were very cloudy and not able to shoot the stars. *ouch* *ouch* *ouch*
- don't go into the resort's swimming pool ... i didnt notice any water filtering whatchamallit haha

Despite the deficiencies and lack of-s, overall, i did enjoy my stay there ... I've been to Langkawi and Pangkor Islands, Manukan and Sapi, Canary islands and my experiences at Perhentian is by far the best yet (albeit short). Haha am still having dreams about the powdery white sands, the visible blue water, the natural beauty. Would love to go again in years to come.

... must get an underwater camera!

Story:
... a night of strong winds, rain and driving through (very) thick fog to reach location. It's not unusual to look at the morning sky, see large grey clouds and then throw a fit. 'The sunrise is not going to be anything special, let's just give up and try again another day.'

Well, luck was certainly on our side this time. Quite special. Already packed my things and ready to drive away when a hint of red rays of the sun eased through the thick fog. Seconds passed, and the strong winds helped move the clouds and fog to reveal this beautiful scenery for a few moments. Everyone rushed to set their tripods at warp speeds. hahaha!

lesson: Never give up on your sunrise!

... floating through the Milky Way, suspended amongst the dust of twinkling stars shimmering in the velvet darkness of the universe ...

... didnt stay long at this location ... far too many weird (the scary kind) splashes. There are prawns in the river .. and where there are prawns, there are crocodiles. Did my usual thing when i get nervous: hum quietly to Fantasia Bulan Madu ;)

7. Tasik Biru Kundang, Kuang
